In January 2020, the Watershed District Act brought together the Lake of the Prairies, Little Saskatchewan River, and Upper Assiniboine River conservation districts to form the Assiniboine West Watershed District.
A watershed is an area where all precipitation and runoff remain within defined boundaries, flowing toward lower elevations and collecting in streams and rivers. The Assiniboine West Watershed includes several key waterways, including the Shell River, Silver Creek, Birdtail Creek, and the Little Saskatchewan and Arrow Rivers, all of which eventually feed into the Assiniboine River.
AWWD provides funding, resources, and land management programs to support sustainable practices that improve soil integrity, water quality, and landscape longevity. Its board is made up of representatives from each sub-district and a provincial appointee, working alongside municipal partners.
Together, they deliver services that help protect the watershed for producers, residents, and the wider community.
